# Word Normalization

> Help your agent pronounce brand names, acronyms, and product terms clearly

Use **Word Normalization** when your agent says a name or phrase incorrectly. A pronunciation rule tells the voice how to say that term without rewriting your business information.

For example, you can keep **Valuez** in your content and provide `values` as a pronunciation to test. Adjust the spelling until the selected voice sounds right.

## Before you begin

Open **AI Voice Agents**, select your agent, and choose **Word Normalization**. You need permission to update its knowledge base to save rules.

Start with a word you have already heard mispronounced in a test conversation. A few focused corrections are easier to maintain than a large list of unnecessary replacements.

## Add a pronunciation rule

1. Select **Add word**.
2. In **Word or phrase to match**, enter the term exactly as it appears in your content.
3. Choose **Pronunciation only**.
4. Enter the desired sound in **Spoken pronunciation form**.
5. Select **English**, **Hindi**, **Marathi**, or **All languages**.
6. Select **Preview** to listen as an initial check.
7. Select **Save word**.
8. Reopen the rule to confirm the saved spelling, pronunciation, and language.
9. Open **Test Agent** and ask a question that makes the agent use that term.

> [!NOTE]
>
> This guide covers pronunciation rules. Other options visible in the dialog, including chat spelling and aliases, are not covered by this workflow. Use English, Hindi, Marathi, or All languages for the rules described here.

## Understand the fields

| Field | What to enter | Example |
| - | - | - |
| **Word or phrase to match** | The term the agent uses in its answers | `CRM` |
| **Spoken pronunciation form** | Readable text that produces the intended sound | `C R M` |
| **Target Language** | The language in which the rule should apply | English |
| **Pronunciation only** | Adjust the spoken form while keeping the original written term | Keep `CRM` in the answer |

Case variants match automatically for rules created through this form. Whole-word matching helps avoid replacing a short term inside an unrelated longer word.

Use a different spoken form from the original spelling. If the pronunciation is already correct, no rule is needed.

## Choose an effective pronunciation

Write the sound in simple text. Try spaces between parts of a brand name, or between letters that should be spoken individually.

| Situation | Example to try | What to listen for |
| - | - | - |
| Letters spoken as one word | `CRM` → `C R M` | Each letter is distinct |
| Joined brand name | `WOWinfotech` → `wow infotech` | The name separates naturally |
| Language-specific name | Write the desired sound in the selected language | The voice uses the expected sounds |

These are starting points for testing, not guaranteed pronunciations. Results depend on the selected voice and language. For Hindi and Marathi, try writing the spoken form in Devanagari.

> [!TIP]
>
> Test a complete sentence as well as the word by itself. A pronunciation that sounds clear alone may need adjustment in a longer answer.

## Review and maintain rules

The rule list shows the matching word and its pronunciation. Use the edit action to change an existing rule, or delete a rule that is no longer needed.

After changing a rule:

* Reopen it to check the saved values.
* Start a fresh test conversation.
* Ask a question that naturally includes the term.
* Listen to the spoken response.
* Repeat the test in each language you use.

The Preview button is a quick listening aid. If the preview service is unavailable, the browser may use its own voice, so confirm the result in **Test Agent** before relying on it for customer calls.

## Troubleshooting

| Problem | What to check |
| - | - |
| The rule will not save | Enter both a matching term and a different pronunciation; choose a supported language |
| The word still sounds unchanged | Confirm the agent actually says the matching word and the rule applies to that language |
| A short rule misses a longer name | Add the complete name or phrase you want to correct |
| Preview sounds different from the agent | Test with the agent's selected voice in a fresh conversation |
| Hindi or Marathi sounds unnatural | Try Devanagari for the spoken form and retest |
| Save or delete is unavailable | Ask your workspace owner to check knowledge-base permissions |
